The female is identical in appearance to the male except that her lower mandible is orange-red (in stead of black) with a black tip.
This male caught a fish and is on his way to feed its young in the nest that is built in a burrow in a river bank in the garden of friends of mine.
The next day, the young flew out, not to return to the nest ever again.

The plumage of this crow-sized woodpecker is entirely black apart from a red crown. In males, the entire crown is red, but in females only the top hindcrown is red with the rest of the body all black. It is the second largest woodpecker in the world; only the Great Slaty Woodpecker (India and Southeast Asia) is bigger.
