European Pied Flycatcher
Bonte Vliegenvanger
Spanderswoud, Hilversum
13 May 2013

This breeding male (12–13.5 cm) is mainly black above and white below, with a large white wing patch, white tail sides and a small forehead patch. Non-breeding males, females and juveniles have the black replaced by a pale brown. The bill has the broad but pointed shape typical of aerial insectivores. As well as taking insects in flight, this species hunts caterpillars amongst the oak foliage, and will eat berries.

Eurasian Sky Lark
Veldleeuwerik
Steenwaard, Houten
17 April 2013

I found this male in its typical display flight, where it goes basically vertically up in the air and performs his song hovering in the sky.

Eleven subspecies of the White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) are currently recognised.
The nominate subspecies of the White Wagtail (Motacilla alba alba) occurs on the European continent and migrates down as far as Kenya.
Motacilla alba yarrellii is a subspecies that occurs in Britain.

Savi's Warbler
Snor
Naarden
22 May 2010

Like most of the reed warblers, Savi's Warbler is heard before it is seen, with a very similar song (reeling sound) as the Grasshopper Warbler (next photo) but lower pitched and therefore louder.
Patiently watching where the sound is coming from will eventually result in the sight of a warm brown warbler, clinging to a reed.

Grasshopper Warbler
Sprinkhaanzanger
Biesbosch, Sliedrecht
6 July 2013

The high, insect-like reeling song of the Grasshopper Warbler is the best clue to its presence.
The sound of the Grasshopper Warbler is significantly higher pitched than the sound of the Savi's Warbler and the individual pulses (reeling sound) are almost twice as slow. It sounds less "buzzy" than the sound of the Savi's Warbler.
I found this one singing from a willow tree at the Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht.

Blackcap (female)
Zwartkop (vrouw)
In my yard, Hilversum
27 March 2013

Like most Sylvia species, it has distinct male and female plumages: The male has the small black cap from which the species gets its name, whereas in the female the cap is brown.

The Blackcap is partially migratory; central and northern European breeders winter in southern Europe and north Africa, where the local populations are resident.

The most reliable difference between de Marsh Tit and the Willow Tit (next photo) is the white patch at the base of the upper mandible of the Marsh Tit (clearly shown on the photo).

Willow Tits have an all black bill with no pale bill spot.

18 April 2012

In summer, the male has a reddish breast and head, thus distinguishing it from the female which has a light brown head and a darker brown streaked back.
In winter, the male’s coloring gets somewhat duller with the red on the breast and head being less obvious.
