This is a male Julia Butterfly. Females are more brown orange than males, and they have more dark marks on top of the wings than males.

I photographed a female in Peru.

Viceroy

The Viceroy is a butterfly that mimics the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus).
It can be distinguished from the Monarch by its smaller size and the postmedian black line that runs across the veins on the hindwing (clearly shown on the photo).

Painted Lady

The Painted Lady is easily distinquised from the American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis) by not having a white spot in the orange cell of the upper forewing.
