This black form of the Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis, previous photo) is a melanistic variety thereof.
Melanism is a development of the dark-colored pigment melanin in the skin or its appendages and is the opposite of albinism.
The Bronx Botanical Garden is known for its (small) population of "Black Squirrels".

The Golden-mantled Ground squirrel looks similar to a chipmunk because it has stripes on its back (though, is larger), but unlike chipmunks, it lacks any facial stripes.
A typical adult ranges from 23 to 30 cm in length.
