This is the smallest woodpecker in the US (14-16 cm).
It differs from the Hairy Woodpecker (next photo) by its smaller size, relatively small bill, foraging habitat and voice.

The Hairy Woodpecker is virtually identical in plumage to the Downy Woodpecker (previous photo) but it is much bigger (20-25 cm) and has a longer bill.

This is the red-shafted (western) subspecies.
The difference with the yellow-shafted (eastern) subspecies (next photo) is the grey (not brown) face and throat and the male's red (not black) malar.

This is the yellow-shafted (eastern) subspecies, and it is male (note the black malar).

Northern Flickers are large woodpeckers that forage mainly on the ground, feeding on ants.
